Donald F. Blakeley, 89, of Alexandria, VA, passed away on February 10, 2024. Born on August 4, 1934, in Philadelphia, PA, he earned his bachelor's degree in General Studies from the University of Nebraska, Omaha, in 1969. As part of the Senior ROTC program, he achieved his Masters in Professional Studies - Agriculture from Cornell in 1972.

Don's Air Force career spanned 35 years, and he retired while residing in Ithaca, NY. Later, he and his beloved wife, Janice Wootton, whom he met in England during his early Air Force days and married on May 27, 1972, moved to Largo,, MD. There, he served as the Junior ROTC leader at Largo HS and Laurel HS in Maryland.

Devoted to his wife for 51 years, Don and Jan were inseparable. Their shared love of family gatherings at Jan’s village home in England saw Don at the BBQ and Jan helping with other preparations. They had a joyful partnership. Don’s sense of humor and quick wit was often showcased through a multitude of jokes which brightened every room he entered. He was known to bring good cheer to others waiting at the PX Pharmacy by saying to them: “Would you mind if I told you a joke?” Soon after peals of laughter would be heard. Don is also remembered for his kindness. He did not care for those who were rude or unkind to others. He also felt wait staff were never paid enough, and therefore tended to be a generous tipper. Random acts of kindness, like buying a meal for someone in need, were also a part of his nature.

Passionate about basketball, Don coached the Senior ROTC intramural team at Cornell and briefly assisted with coaching the high school basketball team at Largo HS. An avid photographer, he embraced digital technology to capture cherished moments at family gatherings.

Don's vibrant personality and laughter endeared him to family and friends. While the party may have ended, the memories of his lively spirit will endure.

Don is survived by his wife Janice and preceded in death by his father Wilfred Blakeley and Mother Phillis Fifield Blakely, brother Harry and sisters Elsie and Mary Olive.
