Mamie Louise Baird

Mamie Louise Karney Baird, Louise to family and friends, passed away 3/28/2019 from complications of Progressive Bulbar Palsy, a variant of ALS. She was born in Wichita Falls Texas on November 20, 1937, the only child of Pina and Minnie Ruth Karney. Both of her parents spent their careers as teachers in a one room school house. Louise spent her career in larger educational facilities teaching math, the last 30 years at Oakton High School, where she retired in 2002.

She is survived by her husband, Don, whom she married August 30,, 1957 in her parent’s living room, where her father, under duress, paid for new curtains. She is also survived by two children, Beverly (Nancy) and Glen (Suzanne),her adored grandchildren, Alysa and Logan, and of course, her dog Gypsy, one of many Lab Rescue pups she adopted over the years.

The family would also like to express our appreciation to her caregiver, Sitta Munu, who provided both Louise and Don with support, care, affection and friendship for the last six months of her life. Sitta helped our entire family adjust to an ever changing new normal and I am not sure how we would have managed without her.

Per Louise’s instruction, we will have a wake for her at Dogfish Alehouse in the near future. The irony of this teetotaler’s request is not lost upon her family or friends and is attributed to her love of their chili and their shrimp tacos. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make donations to the ALS Association, which provided great support as she battled PBPs, or Lab Rescue of the LRCP, who helped her find and adopt many of the dogs she and Don loved over the years
