We met Susan during our Chinese language training in 1989. Susan helped lighten our spirits during what we referred to as the "Long March" of Chinese language training. We will miss her.

I met Susan in 2003 as a very young Fulbrighter backpacking through the Balkans. Susan was the first person who exposed me to the possibility of a Foreign Service career and I am about to celebrate 10 years in the FS partly thanks to her. It was a pleasure to meet up with Susan whenever I was in Washington. I was so sad to learn that she has passed away - she was a true light in the world and her passion for people, new places and adventures was contagious. May her memory be a blessing,

I met Susan on, I don't know which, election observation mission somewhere in the Balkans or Central Asia. I do remember we both served in that capacity in Georgia maybe four years ago. I always hoped she would be serving on a mission to which I'd been assigned; she was such good company. I'm from Portland, Oregon and don't know many folks as knowledgeable about that area of the world as Susan was, She inspired me to study Russian. I'm so sorry she is gone.

I always enjoyed your stories and your unique laugh at our book club meetings. It was a prilivage to be included in a few coffee get togathers after you entered the Goodwin House. Susan, you will be sorely missed.

I was so very sorry to learn today of Susan's passing. She was an inspiration. One of the most outgoing, active, encouraging and positive women I have met. I had a chance to visit Susan at Goodwin House weeks ago, and had looked forward to another get-together. I know that Susan's outreach to others and exemplary service were rooted in her deep spirituality. A true loss.
